The S.S. Numidia was a steam cargo ship built in 1901 in Glasgow, Scotland. The ship departed Liverpool on 6th July 1901 and was on her way to Calcutta carrying a general cargo of 7000 tons. On 20th July the ship shattered aground on Big Brothers Island at the plateau north of the lighthouse. After two hours trying to get off the rocks the engines were stopped. The captain realized by then that the ship was lost. They rescued all the crew and the cargo got salvaged before the vessel finally sank. Today, the wreck is lying vertical to the reef, soft corals have taken the Numidia as their own and decorating the entire remaining metal framework,... bringing the ship back to life. Often there is a strong current running straight onto the wreck. If sea conditions and currents allow the upper part of the wreck can be explored. The top of the wreck starts with the bow broken up lying at 8 m while the rest of the ship is descending at a steep angle to a depth of approximately 80 m but this is far beyond recreational diving limits and out of reach for sports divers.
