The Million Hope is the largest ship wreck in the Red Sea, a Bulk Cargo Carrier from Japan built in 1972. On its way from Aqaba to Taiwan, the 170m long and 25m wide Million Hope was carrying potassium and phosphates barrels. On 20th June 1996, close to the Strait of Tiran a fire broke out in the ship’s superstructure. The ship was out of control and went headfirst into the reef near Nabq, which is located a few Kilometer north of Sharm el Sheikh. This dive site is an astonishing adventure and only diveable at calm sea. Some parts of the ship, like most of the cranes and the upper level of the superstructure were once visible above the surfa...ce, now the main part lies below to a depth of 25m. The wreck is sitting upright and on the bottom with its starboard next to the reef. You will start your dive outside the stern where nudi branches can be seen in the area. There is also a crack which is the result of the impact. You can swim the entire length of the wreck; the huge propeller has been salvaged. Between 4 to 5m depth you find the main deck covered with lion and crocodile fish. If the light is coming through it gives a beautiful view and allows a penetration access to the lower decks of the ship. The bridge is at the stern, behind cargo holds and is entirely open. On the bottom around the ship, if you look carefully you find the remains of a ship which sank in the same spot many years before the Million Hope. The name of the wreck is Hey Daroma. The magnificent proportions of the wreck, the unusual sight - its bow and stern rise up to the surface and the variety of fish and soft corals makes a dive at the Million Hope a memorable experience.
